چکیده

Closed-form expressions that lower and upper bound the penalty of hybrid selection/maximal ratio combining relative to maximal ratio combining (MRC) for -ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) modulations are proved. The bounds offer simple-to-evaluate explicit expressions, and are typically within 0.6 dB for hybrid systems with diversity order up to eight that use at least two branches, yet are independent of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Contrary to conclusions conjectured in a recently published paper, it is proved that the SNR penalty is not a constant, independent of SNR. It is also shown that previous estimates of the performance losses of selection diversity relative to MRC underestimate or lower bound the losses for MPSK modulation systems, and that the true loss can be significantly larger than previously believed. An upper bound to this loss is also obtained.

Energy Detection of Unknown Signals over Composite multipath/shadowing Fading Channels

In this paper, the performance analysis of an energy detector is exploited over composite multipath/shadowing fading channels, which is modeled by Rayleigh-lognormal (RL) distribution. Based on an approximate channel model which was recently proposed by the author, the RL envelope probability density function (pdf) is approximated by a finite sum of weighted Rayleigh pdfs. Relying on this inter...

Virtual branch analysis of symbol error probability for hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining in Rayleigh fading

In this paper, we derive analytical expressions for the symbol error probability (SEP) for a hybrid selection/maximalratio combining (H-S/MRC) diversity system in multipath-fading wireless environments. With H-S/MRC, out of diversity branches are selected and combined using maximal-ratio combining (MRC). We consider coherent detection of -ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) and quadrature amplitude m...

Unified Analysis of Generalized Selection Combining over Arbitrary Fading Channels

We derive general, unified expressions for the probability density function, cumulative distribution function, and mean SNR of generalized selection combining operating over multibranch, arbitrary, correlated, non-identical fading channels. The expressions are written in terms of the joint probability density function of the branch signals and allow for the equalgain and maximal-ratio methods i...

Effect of Transmission Codes on Hybrid SC/MRC Diversity Reception MQAM system over Rayleigh Fading Channels

In this paper, the effect of transmission codes on the performance of coherent square M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (CSMQAM) under hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (H-S/MRC) diversity is analysed. The fading channels are modeled as frequency non-selective slow independent and identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The ...

Performance analysis for MRC and postdetection EGC over generalized gamma fading channels

In this paper, we provide a unified analysis of average symbol error probability (SEP) for a diversity system over generalized gamma fading channels, which is a generalization of Rayleigh, Nakagami, and Ricean fading channels. We consider independent generalized gamma fading on the diversity branches and derive different closed-form expressions of the average SEP for a general class of M -ary m...
